An Amazing Reservoir of Spiritual Power

The late Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, and evangelical leader told the following story—
During the Great Depression, a sheep ranch owner by the name of Yates fell on hard times (as did many during those years). He wasn’t able to make enough on his ranching operation to pay the principal and interest on the mortgage, so he was in danger of losing his ranch. With little income for clothes and food, his family lived on government subsidy.
For some time he was troubled over his financial situation and worried about his future. Then one day, out of the blue, a seismographic crew from an oil company showed up and told him there could be oil on his property. They asked for permission to drill a wildcat well, and he signed a lease contract.
At a depth of 1,115 feet, the company struck oil and discovered a huge oil reserve. The first well came in at 80,000 barrels a day. Many subsequent wells resulted in even larger reserves of oil. After 30 years of drilling on Mr. Yates property, a government test revealed it still had the potential flow of 125,000 barrels of oil a day. This was known in the drilling industry as the famous Yates Pool Oil Field.
Indeed, Mr. Yates not only owned the land but also the mineral rights that came with it. Here was a man who had been relying on government relief and living in poverty, yet he was a wealthy man who just didn’t know it! The problem is that even though he owned the oil and the wealth that came with it, he didn’t know it was there.
I wonder how many Christians live in spiritual poverty, not realizing they are actually very wealthy. Some seem unaware of the spiritual riches which are within reach and the spiritual power that is available. The Holy Spirit lives in the heart of every believer and this is an amazing reservoir of spiritual power.
This Sunday I will preach on the The Spirit-Filled life (Ephesians 5:18) in our series God @ Work. Surely it’s time for us to tap into the power which is ours!
