It’s Only Words…

This past Sunday I spoke about words. Today I want us to think some more about words and, particularly, what the Word says about words.
Let me ask you first: Do you think the kind of words a person uses are an indication of his character? In other words-can you interpret what a person is by what he says?
Well, Jesus thought so! He said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). If that is true, then it matters the kind of words we use. That is why the Apostle Paul said, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…” (Ephesians 4:29).
An unwholesome word is a hurtful word. Paul teaches us to say only what is helpful and not what is hurtful. We should select words to use which build up and not those which tear down.
Is this a big deal? Yes! Paul said in Ephesian 4:30 that a person may grieve the Holy Spirit not only by how he lives but by what he says. We may grieve our dear Lord by the words which come from our mouth. We should never use and then excuse hurtful, hateful, or harmful speech by simply saying: “It’s only words.” The Word says words matter-so let that settle the matter! Further, let this serve as a reminder to stop and think before you speak.
