Never Pray Without This

This past Sunday we looked at Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23 and I spoke about what it teaches us all about prayer. However, one thing I did not mention is this: Before Paul begins his prayer of intercession for others, he first offers a prayer of thanksgiving for them. Actually, this is characteristic of Paul because twenty six times in his writings he thanks God for other believers. But why? I think because he realized just how important they were to him. He could not do ministry without them and they meant the world to him. This teaches us something important. When we pray for one another, we should first give thanks for one another.

I heard someone say once, “Behind every successful man is a loving wife and a mother-in-law in shock.” I think it’s true that behind every successful person is a network of people who help make the achievement possible. Perhaps we should never pray without making mention in our prayers of the people who mean so much to our lives.

How about you? Can you think of others around you who have made a difference in your life? Maybe it would be a good idea today to take some time and give thanks for them. Every person in your life that matters to you probably serves as another reason to give thanks to the God who watches over you. If you will think about them perhaps that is enough reason to give thanks for them.

Shakespeare once said, “I count myself in nothing else so happy as in a soul remembering my friends.” Let us not fail to remember others and to happily pray for them.

Devotedly yours,

Pastor Ron
