The Secret to Victory Over Temptation

Let’s think about what we talked about this past Sunday regarding temptation. Even though we will be tempted, we will not face a temptation so great that it cannot be resisted. The reason? It is because God restrains that temptation. The Bible says, “God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide you a way out so that you can stand up under it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
God promises to help and that is why Jesus taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13). The Lord’s Prayer is asking God to protect you from any situation where you might be overcome by strong temptation. Now keep in mind: God never causes temptation, but He restrains temptation. He holds back enough that we never have too much. So never try to justify your sin by overestimating the power of temptation while underestimating the power of God. For God is faithful… And you will never be tempted beyond what you are able. So don’t blame God if you succumb to sin. For that matter, don’t blame the devil either saying (like Flip Wilson used to say) “The devil made me do it.” Forget that! If the devil could make you sin, he would make you sin. And if he would make you sin some of the time, he would make you sin all of the time. But the devil can’t make you sin, though he will tempt you to sin. So, once again, remember there is no such thing as a temptation you can’t resist. Nathaniel Willis wrote, “No degree of temptation justifies any degree of sin.”
If it’s true that I never face a temptation I can’t resist, then that tells me if I sin it’s not because I am tempted to sin but because I want to sin. It’s not because I can’t resist temptation, but because I won’t resist temptation. So the ultimate victory comes from whether or not I daily submit my will to my Lord’s rule. I must die daily to sinful desire and submit completely to Jesus’ rule and reign in my heart. Here is the place of battle and the secret to victory. Jesus be Lord in my heart!
