A prominent Boston preacher, Dr. S.D. Gordon, one Easter Sunday morning carried an old beat-up rusty bird cage onto the stage of his church and placed it next to the pulpit. As he delivered his sermon that morning he help up the cage and said, “You might be wondering why this is here…let me tell you the story of it. Several days ago I noticed a little boy in tattered blue jeans and a dirty T-shirt, cap off to the side, who was walking down an alley, whistling and swinging this bird cage. Several tiny field sparrows were shivering on the floor of it. So I stopped him and asked what he was going to do with the small birds. The young boy answered, ‘I am going to tease them, play with them, and have fun with them.’ So I asked him, ‘When you get through with them, what are you going to do with them?’ He thought for a moment and said, ‘Well, I got a couple of cats at home and they like birds. So I’ll just let them have at ‘em.’”
Dr. Gordon said his heart went out to them and so he said, “How much do you want for those birds?” Surprised, the boy answered, “Mister, these birds ain’t no good.” “Well,” Dr. Gordon replied, “regardless, how much do you want for them?” The little fellow said, “How about two bucks?” He said, “Sold.” So he reached in his pocket and pulled out two dollar bills. The young kid pushed the bird cage forward, pleased with his stroke of fortune.
When the boy walked away, the pastor put some distance between the young boy and him before he lifted up the door to the bird cage and said, “Shoo, shoo.” Then he reached in, and with his hand, gently guided the tiny birds out the cage door and they flew free.
Dr. Gordon went on to explain that Satan trapped the human race in his cage of captivity beginning in Eden’s Garden and left us in a frightening state. Satan loves to play his mischief on us and have fun at our expense. Further, his ultimate plan is our destruction. But Jesus came along and paid the price for our freedom at Calvary and opened the door of the tomb for our release on Easter Sunday morning. By Christ’s death and resurrection, He has set us free! Hallelujah, what a Savior!
