What Matters Most

President Ronald Reagan once told the story of an incident when he was a teen and needed a new pair of boots made. In those days, you couldn’t just go to a shoe store, you went to the shoemaker shop. The cobbler asked the young man, “Do you want blunt end toes or pointed end toes?” Reagan shrugged his shoulders and said, “I don’t care, whatever you think.” When the boots were ready, Reagan examined his new boots and looked at the toes. One of them was flat, the other boot was pointed. Reagan said, “How can I wear a pair of boots like this?” The cobbler said, “You said you didn’t care.” From that day on, Ronald Reagan said, “If you don’t make a decision about the things that matter the most to you, somebody else is going to make them for you.”

He was right about that! We need to resolve in our hearts what the most important things in our life are and structure our priorities around these essential things. There will always be lesser things which will clamor for our attention and affection. You can count on it! There will even be those things which present themselves as urgent things. But don’t even let these urgent things take the place of important things.

There’s a verse which tells us “(Jesus) steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). Jesus resolutely set His focus on Calvary as the priority of His ministry. Nothing would distract, or interfere, or move Him off course. Jesus kept first what was most important to Him. We should follow His example in keeping first things first in our lives. Decide what matters most to you or someone else is going to do that for you.
Devotedly yours,
Pastor Ron
