What the Word Says About Words
by Rick Jacobs
I want you to think with me about words. In particular, consider what the Word says about words. Let me ask you this first: Do you think the kind of words a person uses are an indication of character? In other words-Can you interpret what a person is by what he says? Well, you would want to know-Jesus thought so. He said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). If that is true then it shows it matters the kind of words we use.
Hurtful words, hateful words, and harmful words should never be found on the lips of a Christian. But may very well be until we get to the heart of the matter. And the heart of the matter is that it is a matter of the heart. The Book of Proverbs says, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he” (Proverbs 23:7 KJV). Also, it says, “Above all else guard your heart, for it is the well-spring of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
If the right kind of thoughts are in our hearts, then the right kind of words will be on our lips. Paul gave us a way to test our words and see if they are worthy to say: “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ” (Colossians 3:17).
The Psalmist gives us a prayer which serves as a beginning point:
“May the words of my mouth
And the meditations of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
O Lord, my Rock, and my Redeemer.”
These are good words to help us use the right kinds of words. May we always be careful and prayerful about the words we say, the words we don’t say, and the spirit about us.
